Researchers compared the care that gynecologic oncologists, gynecologists and general surgeons provided to 3,000 women ages 65 or older who had surgery for early-stage ovarian cancer. Patients treated by the gynecologic oncologists and gynecologists had half the mortality rate (2.1% versus 4%) of those treated by general surgeons. Women diagnosed with ovarian cancer should seek treatment by a gynecologic oncologist. To find one, contact the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, 312-235-4060, www.sgo.org.
