Metformin and Kidney Disease

For diabetes patients with kidney disease, the benefits of metformin may outweigh the risks. The drug metformin is very effective for type 2 diabetes, but an FDA label dating to 1994 restricts its use in patients with kidney problems. Recent evidence now shows that metformin is safe for patients with mild-to-moderate kidney disease.
