There's a diabetes medication risk for people with an underactive thyroid. Metformin, a drug often prescribed to regulate blood sugar levels, may lower thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) in patients who have an underactive thyroid. Low TSH increases risk for cardiovascular problems and broken bones. Talk to your doctor before beginning metformin therapy.
