Beware of Contaminated Fruits and Vegetables
Fruits and vegetables contaminated with bacteria such as salmonella and E. coli now cause more illness than raw chicken or eggs. The contamination comes from the use of manure as a fertilizer or from cross-contamination in home and restaurant kitchens.
Precaution: Wash fruits and vegetables under running water use separate cutting boards for raw meat, poultry, fish and produce, and thoroughly wash countertops on which unwashed produce had been placed.
